SEO basics every small business website should cover

You do not need to be an expert to get the basics of search right. These are the essentials we check on every small business website.

Search engine optimisation sounds complicated, but for most small businesses the basics decide most of the result. If people search for what you do in your city, and your website is clear, fast and easy to understand, you are already ahead of many competitors. These are the basics we check first.

Say clearly what you do and where

Every page should make it obvious what you offer and who it is for. Use the words your customers use, and mention your city or area where it is true, for example "dental clinic in Chennai" rather than a vague slogan. Each page needs one clear main heading and a short description that explains the page in a sentence or two.

Give each service its own page

A single page that lists everything is harder to find in search than separate pages for each thing you do. If you run a clinic, a page for each treatment lets someone searching for that treatment land exactly where they need to. Write real, helpful content on each page rather than copying text from elsewhere.

Make the site fast and mobile friendly

Most people visit from a phone. If your pages load slowly or the text is tiny, visitors leave and search engines notice. Compress your images, avoid heavy videos that start playing on their own, and test the site on a real phone with a normal mobile connection.

Set up your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, a complete Google Business Profile is often as important as the website. Add your correct address, phone number, opening hours, photos and services, and ask happy customers for reviews. Keep your details the same everywhere online.

Add the technical basics

Make sure your site has a sitemap that search engines can read, that Google Search Console is connected so you can see how people find you, and that every page has its own title and description. A privacy policy and clear contact details also help visitors trust you.

Keep publishing useful content

Articles and videos that answer the questions your customers ask are the best long-term way to bring in new visitors. You do not need to post every day. A steady rhythm of useful pieces beats a burst followed by months of silence. SEO is slow, so expect it to take a few months to build.
